Being a teacher of English language learners is not an easy task, and although many guidelines can aid in the promotion of English language learning, this still does not promise a foolproof plan. One of the most essential strategies for teaching English language learners is to know where to shift your focus because being a teacher is about learning methods and techniques, and the teacher also learning about their students.
Knowledge about the scope of the questions in the form will maximize the benefits that the answers to these questions may provide for both the teacher and the English language learner. The form’s questions are simple, such as a student’s native language, country of birth, proficiency level, etc. These give a better picture of the student’s background and current status in learning English. Even personal information is asked, such as the student’s family background and educational experience, and this provides the ELL teacher an idea of a student’s support system and previous experience with studying, much more precisely, English.
The information helps get to know my student so that I can make informed decisions in the classroom. It also enables me to get a view of the current challenges or barriers in learning that my student may have. These challenges may be related to family circumstances, available support systems, cultural traditions, or previous educational experiences that may impact a student’s confidence and performance.
