Assignment 1

Instructions for Assignment 1 (Please watch the data demonstrations for guidance on this assignment):

  1. First, visit the USDA ERS https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/ and take some time to explore the different kinds of data provided on this page.

  1. 2.       Specifically look over the Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System. Then, consider some of the other data products. Select three different data product. By data products, I mean, for example, (1) Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System, (2) Food Price Outlook, and (3) Vegetables and Pulses Data. Note: it is entirely up to you which three data products you select.

  1. Next, answer the questions below and on the following page as they pertain the data products you identified.

Upload your responses below.

Assignment 2

Instructions for Assignment 2:

  1. Return to the USDA data products page you explored in assignment 1.
  2. Identify one data product, and then select one item provided by this data product that you will collect. For example: under the “Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System” data product, one could select the Excel file “Fruit (all uses).”  Upon opening the file, one could then select the sheet labeled “Citrus” and the column labeled “Fresh.” This would constitute “one variable.” Note that this should be relevant to your firm, so refer back to assignment 6 (do not just randomly grab any column of data). Collect one variable (only one column of data) for the most recent 20 years (or most recent years available if less than 20). For example, in the demonstration video and Excel file—“Blackberries” represents one variable (one column). You will also want to collect the year column as well.
  3. Next, create one table AND one figure using MS Excel. Important: Specifically follow the guidance I provided in constructing a table and figure as attention to detail here is vital to your grade for this assignment. Note that your table and figure should have the year and the one variable you collected—the demonstration has the year and three variables.
  4. Cite the table and figure, as I demonstrated.
  5. Copy and paste your table and figure into a word document. The table should be on the first page, and the figure should be on the second page. Again, appearance of the table and figure is very important, so make sure you make your submission looks as close to what I demonstrated as possible.
  6. On the third page of the MS Word document you created, in 3-5 sentences, describe the data you collected and the trend you see based on the table and figure you created. Finally, construct an appropriate APA reference (to the best of your ability) for this data set.
  7. Upload your MS Word file with your (1) table, (2) figure, and (3) reference page (with one reference) to the assignment 2 assignment file.

Assignment 1
Instructions for Assignment 1 (Please watch the data demonstrations for guidance on this assignment):
1 First, visit the USDA ERS /data-products/ and take some time to explore the different kinds of data provided on this page.
2 Specifically look over the Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System. Then, consider some of the other data products. Select three different data product. 3 Next, answer the questions below and on the following page as they pertain the data products you identified.
Upload your responses below.
A. What are the three data products you explored?
1 Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System
2 Food Price Outlook
3 Food Consumption and Nutrient Intakes
B. In a few sentences and for each data product you selected, describe what type of data each of the data products provides (e.g., types of measures, prices, counts, commodities, etc.).
1 This data product provides the three interrelated series on good nutrient and availability for consumption namely (1) food availability data, (2) loss-adjusted food availability data, and (3) nutrient availability data. In this measure, the food availability data is the basis for loss-adjusted and nutrient availability data. Accordingly, each of these data series comprise two hundred (200) different commodities.
2 The food price outlook includes the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which computes the periodic changes in the amount that urban buyers pay for any basket of consumer goods and services. However, the food price outlook only determines retail prices for food items, and not other consumer goods and services related to food.
3 This measure has two main measures namely; (1) Food Consumption Estimates and (2) Nutrient Intake Estimates. This includes three tables for both measures collected from the years 2007 to 2010. Specifically, these measures were categorized based on whether the intake was done at home or away (i.e., school, fast food, and school).
C. In a few sentences and for each data product you selected, describe what type of “marketing intelligence” you may be able to provide with each data product? In other words, how might your or another firm benefit by having this kind of information?
1 The food availability data could be used for marketing purposes for supply chains. Since some food commodities could be scarce in some locations, suppliers can market their services to industries located in areas with low supply.
2 The CPI (Food Price Outlook) can help craft marketing approach for urban consumers. One of the important aspects of this dataset is its record of the relative changes in food prices, which can be used for determining price points for the company’s food products.
3 The Food consumption and nutrient intake data provides information about where consumers are susceptible to unhealthy and innutritious foods. Accordingly, this can help craft marketing messages towards parents and health-conscious individuals. Parents are known to choose foods that improve the heal...
