Geography Discussions: The 2015 Nepal Earthquake

Coursework Instructions:

1Write at least 250 words about a natural hazard or disaster that has happened recently. Do some research and try to find a natural hazard or disaster that has happened in the last few months. The natural hazard or disaster MUST have occurred in the last two years. Write a short summary of the event, details of disaster, effect on human or animal life, what this event means for the future, or anything else that seems appropriate or applicable to the class and the report. You must also include any references you used (website, magazine, URL). Pick something that interests you...it could be a flood, a hurricane, an earthquake or anything else that is covered in the class. Have fun with this!2Write at least 250 words about a natural hazard or disaster that has happened recently. You must also include a link to a video that is related to your disaster. Pick something that interests you...it could be a flood, a hurricane, an earthquake or anything else that is covered in the class. Have fun with this!3For this discussion topic please choose a natural hazard/disaster that occurred prior to the year 1900. You should be able to find plenty of examples online and if not please contact me and I can help you find one. I want you to write this post as if you were witnessing the event and writing an account of what happened. Please choose an event that actually happened but you can use your imagination for the details. However, please incorporate class material into your report. Remember to also think about what technologies were available at the time. For example, there would not be a seismograph in 1600 or a helicopter to save people in 1800. Remember to also include any references you used and your post must be at least 250 words. 4Last discussion topic was about the past and this one is about the future. Write a report (similar to how you did the previous discussion topic) about a futuristic natural hazard. This can take place any time in the future and the actual event or landform can be real or imaginary. Please get creative with this but remember for full points your report MUST include plenty of information or material that we have covered in class or in the textbook and also include any references you used. It also must be at least 250 words 5Your final discussion post will be a reflection. Which natural disaster/hazard have you found to be the most interesting and why? What are some major issues concerning natural hazards/disasters in the future? What can we do to protect ourselves against the wrath of nature? How important are natural hazards/disasters regarding the future of our species? You do not have to answer all of these questions and you can also touch on other aspects of natural hazards/disasters. Make sure you include material from the class in your response. In essence... why do we study natural disasters and does it really matter? Why or why not? Your post must be at least 250 words. It is considered plagiarism to use any material that is not your own without citing where that material came from. This includes websites, blogs, online comments, even material form the textbook. It is OK to use outside material but you must cite when you do! The word count refers to material you wrote only, it does not include quotes from other authors or citations.

Natural Disasters
Natural disasters are extreme unexpected events caused by environmental factors. They cause significant property damage, loss of life, economic damage and sometimes permanent change to the natural environment. Examples of natural disasters include earthquakes, landslides, floods, hurricanes, drought, wildfire and other geologic processes. There are three broad categories into which natural disasters fall into; those brought about by the movements of the earth, these occur with little or no warning and include earthquakes and tsunamis. Weather-related disasters which have some degree of advanced caution and include tornadoes and hurricanes. Extreme weather-related events which result in floods, landslides, and famine.
The 2015 Nepal Earthquake
The Nepal earthquake also referred to as the Gorkha earthquake occurred at 11:56 Nepal Standard time on 25th April 2015. It had a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX, which is considered violent and a magnitude of 7.8Mw. Its epicenter was at Barpak, east of Gorkha District (28.147°N, 84.708°E). Its hypocenter was at a depth of 15km which is considered shallow and therefore more destructive than quakes that originate deeper in the ground. Teleseismic P waves for the Nepal earthquake indicate that the rupture extended for about 160km east-southeast from the hypocenter with a duration of 55 seconds (Miao, & Popp, 2014). The earthquake shook much of Central Nepal followed by a series of aftershocks.
The earthquake affected Nepal, Bangladesh, and India. The 2015 rupture destroyed numerous buildings and infrastructure in both rural and urban areas. It not only triggered a large number of rock falls, but also landslides in the mountainous regions that blocked roads obstructing rescue activities and disconnecting remote areas. According to Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology, the total damage was approximately 10 billion dollars, which are about a half of Nepal's gross domestic product. The earthquake caused 8,964 deaths with 199 people missing. Also, 21952 people were injured and 3.5 million rendered homeless. The quakes triggered more than 4,300 landslides and ice avalanches.Nepal's centuries-old buildings including temples were destroyed. In Kathmandu city a significant number of the poorly designed buildings were damaged due to the vulnerability of the area to seismic waves (https://youtube/9h9EdWopTi0).
1881 Hurricane Season
The 1881 Atlantic Hurricane Season ran through the summer and the early fall of 1881. This is a point in time when tropical cyclones formed in the Atlantic Ocean every year. During the 1881 season, there were three tropical storms and four hurricanes. However, due to lack of modern satellite and remote sensing technologies only storms that affected inhabited land regions or encountered water vessels at sea were recorded meaning the actual total could be higher. Five of the hurricanes occurred in August and two in September.
Tropical storm one impacted Mississippi from 1st to 4th August. It knocked down trees, destroyed farm products, and demolished buildings. Later that month tropical storm two was experienced in Corpus Christi...
