Four years ago, the United States was hit by Hurricane Sandy. This was thought to be the worst disaster ever but not until floods hit Louisiana in August 2016 (Holly & Rosa, 2016). The calamity claimed 13 lives and a lot of property. Other victims lost everything they owned. There was disruption of power. They lost homes; the stores ran out of fuel and food. Life became unbearable. It was estimated to cost more than $30 million to fix the mess.
The disaster was due to the heavy rains experienced in the area. In a week, the area received 6900,000,000,000 gallons of rain. This meant that in 15 hours, there was more than 31 inches of rainfall (Holly & Rosa, 2016). It struck a single part of Livingston Parish. The disaster was Quick and ferocious. Water was rising at a very high speed. Trees were struck down falling on buildings; cars were carried away, homes and power lines were destroyed just to name a few.
Red Cross responded quickly to the disaster. They were at the frontline in helping rescue the victims. They asked for donations to help the victims. The donations were then offered to the victims as financial assistance of $125 per person (WAFB Staff, 2016). They were as well very active in food donations and operating shelters among others. The national government responded with an immediate effect. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s director arrived at the affected area followed by US Homeland Security Secretary.
The president of United States declared about 20 parishes as disaster areas and directed FEMA to use all the available resources in rescue and recovery. There were critics though that he failed to end his vocation at Martha’s Vineyard and visit the area. More than 1400 pets and 30,000 residents were rescued by Local Emergency Responders, neighbors, The US Coast Guard and the National Guard (Holly and Rosa). The governor of Louisiana asked for volunteers to help victims clean their homes.
After a week from the onset of the disaster, 12000 people had made their applications to the federal government for the seeking for emergency assistance while others remained in shelters (Elizabeth, 2016). Leaders in conjunction with FEMA laid down plans to assist the victims. Plans were underway to help in the settling of the homeless victims. The first thing they did was facilitating mobile homes for the victims. There were controversies though that these mobile homes could be hazardous to health as they were compared to those that were provided by FEMA during Hurricane Katrina (Elizabeth, 2016).
