Summary
In these two chapters, God speaks to Jacob and commands him to build an altar for him. As a show of reverence to God, Jacob takes his entire household with him. However, before they go, understanding the sovereignty of God, Jacob asks that everyone in his household purifies themselves. Jacob explains to them that his reverence to God comes from his response to the calls he made while in distress. As Jacob honor’s God’s command, God makes sure that Jacob is not disturbed while on the way.
Having honored God in his show of respect, God decides to bless Jacob and makes him an eternal promise to continually bless him and to increase the number of descendants.
However, after God’s promise to Jacob, his parents unfortunately die. Rachel the mother to Jacob and Esau dies while giving birth and their father Isaac dies of old age.
The two chapters also offer readers a summary of the family lines of both Jacob and Esau. From these family lines, one is made to agree with the notion that God blessed Jacob and increased the number of his descendants.
What do readers learn about God and God’s relationship with man from the story?
One thing that readers learn from the story is that God is superior to man. From the story, God issues commands to Jacob who has to obey as a sign of respect. In Chapter 35: 1, God asks Jacob to “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God.” This is a direct command from God.
The relationship between God and man is also based on the idea of giving and taking. This means that there are mutual concessions as well as compromises between both parties. As God issues His command to Jacob, he reminds him that he is the same God “who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.” This means that God is asking Jacob to build an altar for him because of what he did for Jacob as he was fleeing from his brother.
