Jails are places where convicted criminals are locked. An imprisonment sentence involves a denial of the liberty rights of an individual. It, therefore, does not entail a limitation of the other fundamental human rights except for those that are indeed restricted by the fact of being a detainee. Jails have in the past been regarded as inadequate institutions due to the difficulties prisoners went through while in those institutions.
The failure to provide sufficient medical attention and care to prisoners made jails to be regarded as weak institutions. Medical attention was rarely provided. Patients who were treated within the prison facilities, but showed no improvements were denied access to external medical services. Many cases of deaths were recorded due to neglect of sick captives.
Poor living conditions were another major problem in jails. Balanced diet was not available to prisoners, as they were provided with the same meal over and over again. They consequently lacked certain nutrients. Poor clothing made detainees to be prone to diseases such as pneumonia (Bartollas & Siegel, 2013).
The physical conditions in the detention centers were unbearable and inhumane. Due to delay in court cases, there was overcrowding which made cleanliness and other amenities to be insufficient. The poor sanitation made life in the prisons difficult as it was characterized by poor drainage systems. Other factors such as noise, lack of measures to protect detainees against exposure to AIDS and other diseases and tobacco smoke made the prisons to be viewed negatively by the society.
There was also the denial of the freedom of worship and assembly. Renunciation of these rights showed that the prisoners beliefs were not being respected. Holding unnecessary gatherings was illegal as to maintain peace in jails.
