Recommendations for Nursing Education
Nursing education is the second main issue discussed in the IOM report, and different recommendations on the same were made. The two most effective recommendations were; ensuring an increment in the number of nurses holding a bachelor’s degree who are in active practice and ensuring better diversity in the work place. A trained nurse can work irrespective of their gender, race, or ethnicity (IOM). The committee suggested that despite the educational requirement for nurses at entry-level jobs, there should be an increase in BSNs. The committee also suggested that having a more diverse workforce would highly benefit the future of nursing.
The Rationale for the recommendations
There is advancement in almost every field of the modern world, including healthcare. New diseases like the Coronavirus disease, pre-existing diseases are producing new and greater complications, diseases becoming resistant to drugs, and new and better treatment plans being invented; means that nurses need to stay at per with research and current occurrences. BSNs are introduced to research early while still in school (Kovner et al., 2010), so it is logical that increasing the number of BSNs in practice will add more value. With such improvements in healthcare, there is a need for trained nurse managers with a vast understanding of evidence-based practice and assessment skills in areas like the collaboration of care. These skills are what make it sensible to have more BSNs.
