Incivility in Nursing Practice
In the course of my nursing practice, I witnessed incivility when a nurse leader was outrightly rude to a junior nurse. Her rudeness was evident in how she responded to the junior staff queries and how she often yelled at her for seeking clarifications on issues. The morale and productivity of the junior nurse decreased over time and she had to leave the organization as a result. The workplace had become too toxic for her. Before deciding to leave, she wanted to report the issue but the organization lacked clear guidelines on how to report such behavior if the perpetrator was the manager.
This could have been prevented if there was enough awareness within the organization about incivility. Awareness about incivility within an organization reduces the prevalence and empowers people to openly confront such behavior (Warrner, Sommers, Zappa, & Thornlow, 2016).
