Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme found in almost all living cells. The lactate dehydrogenase enzyme catalyzes the conversion of lactate to pyruvate and pyruvate to lactate. LDH converts NAD+ to NADH and NADH to NAD+ (Klein, 2020). Lactate dehydrogenase is used to reduce carbonyl groups by oxidizing the reversible reaction of lactate to pyruvate, using NAD+ as a coenzyme. Isoenzymes of LDH can be used as diagnostic tools since the LDH isoenzymes test can be used to locate the tissues that have been damaged and identify their type and the severity of damage (Farhana and Lappin, 2022). The different conditions that the LDH isoenzymes test can be used to diagnose include anemia, heart attack, kidney disease, and liver diseases. A condition such as a heart attack can be diagnosed using the electrocardiogram (ECG) test other than the LDH test. The advantage of using an ECG test over LDH isoenzymes is that an ECG test can show if the patient has had a heart attack before. The disadvantage of using ECG over LDH test to diagnose heart attack is that the ECG test does not show the severity of cell damage.
