Nurses play a significant role in policy development. Registered nurses and nurse practitioners take part in committees involved in policy development. Arabi et al. (2014) note that since nurses deal directly with patients, their position helps them understand specific patient needs. In policy development, nurses propose policies, advocate for policy change, and encourage policy improvement (American, 2020). Institutions such as the Association of Public Health Nurses work with nurses and encourages them to engage in policy advocate. The process allows many nurses to take part in policy development in areas such as writing white papers to policy-makers, serving in committees, boards, and taking up leadership roles to change policy.
