People in the age bracket above sixty-five years are likely to succumb to accidents and other work-place injuries in addition to dying of cancer and mesothelioma compared to those below the age of sixty-five years.b) (1 mark) what are most of these older individuals dying from?
Mesothelioma is the leading cause of work-related deaths due to exposure to asbestos. Canada is the leading producer of asbestos, and the aging population is significantly impacted by the exposure to asbestos. c) (3 marks) Why might we expect deaths from malignant mesothelioma in Canada to decrease over the next 10-20 years?
There is increased awareness about the risks associated with mining of asbestos. Exposure to asbestos is the leading factor for mesothelioma which is the leading cause of deaths in Canada. 2) (6 marks total) Environmental health often involves “tradeoffs” in which a policy, practice, or product that provides benefits also has some negative consequences for human health and/or the environment. Please discuss the tradeoffs (i.e., at least one benefit and one possible negative consequence) involved in the following.a) (3 marks) The use of chlorine for drinking water treatment.
Chlorine is considered effective in the treatment of drinking water as it leaves a layer that prevents reinfection of treated water. This makes sure that water is transported safely to homes. Chlorine compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons have been linked to the pollution and depletion of the ozone layer. The use of CFCs requires a tradeoff between its harmful side and the positive effects that it adds to the society.b) (3 marks) The use of incinerators for solid waste disposal.
Large-scale incinerators have a crucial role of getting rid of solid wastes, leading to a clean environment. Burning of wastes however, leads to emission of harmful wastes and toxic gases that are released into the atmosphere. Use of incinerators requires a tradeoff between living in a clean environment and overlooking the harm of toxic gases that are released to the atmosphere. 3) (3 marks total) Why is “climate change” a more appropriate term than “global warming”?
Climate change as a name comes from the overall change in temperatures of a place. It can be observed through occurrences of drought, crops failing to produce, drying of rivers and streams, and the loss of biodiversity. It is easy to show and feel the effects of climate change. Global warming on the other hand takes the changes in the earth’s temperature to a global scale, defining the changes in terms of the whole earth. Observing these changes at the global level is not more convincing and people can take them for granted.
