Military Deployed Families: Policy Gaps, Challenges, and Recommendations

Coursework Instructions:

Early Childhood Education Class
Topic: Create your own policy to help military deployed families with emphasis on families that have children
Prompt: Last week for Part A you researched a policy that affects military deployed families and wrote an executive summary based on the two articles you researched.
Now, this week I want you to focus on the last part which is Part B that is below.
Part B: This week you will focus on writing your policy to help military deployed families with emphasis on those military parents who have children back home.
Step #1: Based on the policy you chose in your executive summary, now I want you to create your own policy that can help military deployed families.
Step #2: Start by re-reading your executive summary and then re-read the two articles you used in your executive summary to give you ideas to create your own policy.
Step #3: Now, in a 2-page paper create and write your own policy to help military deployed families. For example, in your paper I want you to discuss things you disagree with the policy you chose in your executive summary and things you would like to change within the policy.
Step #4: Therefore, create your own policy based on the changes you want to see happen with the policy you mention in your executive summary. For example, offer recommendations as to how you would like your policy to be implemented. Basically, what I mean by creating your own policy is that want you to do is modify the policy you chose in your executive summary and I want you to tell me how you would like your policy to be applied to help military families especially military parents who have children.
For instance, just to give you an idea of what children who have military parents... think about what the children go through when their military parents are in deployment. Also, think about what children go through when their military parents return from deployment unharmed. In addition, think about what children go through when their military parents comeback from deployment with noticeable injuries such as missing limbs, or mental, emotional, and psychological health issues like PSTD all of which can also affect children in how they see their military parents because the military parent's issues can also affect their children's behaviors especially if their military parent dies after deployment because lack of resources available to get professional help.
Step #5: Therefore, in one page discuss parts of the policy you chose in your executive summary and how you disagree with certain things within that policy,
Step #6: Then, in the second page re-create that policy in your executive summary as your own policy by stating recommendations to how you would like your policy to be implemented to help military families.

Policy Gaps and Challenges
The deploy or get-out policy is useful because it ensures that soldiers are motivated to return to duty. However, there are certain limitations to the policy provisions. The policy has a fair representation of soldiers' interests, including their families. It places much pressure on soldiers to get deployable status without considering whether the families are faring well in life. The exceptions the policy makes focus on injured officers, postpartum, and pregnant individuals. The policy fails to address soldiers facing mental health issues. Other soldiers could also have family or social issues that may prevent them from returning to deployable status. These issues include the death of family members and terminal illness to a person requiring the soldier's availability. There is nothing the policy outlines to cover these crucial aspects of soldiers' life.
The policy has underestimated the impact of mental health on the troops, which I think should be part of those exceptions. The most common mental health problems faced by returning soldiers are depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The common symptoms of someone experiencing depression and PTSD include low concentration, lack of apathy, appetite loss, hypervigilance, and experiences sleeping problems. In my opinion, it is inhuman and inappropriate for someone experiencing these symptoms to return to deployment status.
Studies show that about 30% of soldiers experience mental problems in the first 3 or 4 months when they are with their families (Southwell & MacDermid Wadsworth, 2016). Troops returning on duty with PTSD perform poorly in their different responsibilities. They ...
