Phelps’ statement suggests that the two classes of readers are categorized based on their perspective. Those who read to remember are curious to explore the world more, while those who read to forget may have two agendas: First, these people would like to forget previous knowledge to comprehend new information. Furthermore, these people would like to forget the present to understand the past and see the future.
Phelps’ view on readers and reading applies to children, especially in stressful situations. Children might encounter an unexpected or expected stressful situation. A typical situation allows children to adjust due to its certainty, while an unexpected condition catches the child unprepared. These situations include losing a loved one, suicide, violence, murder, divorce, or any disturbances in the family and personal well-being (Granot, 2005, p. 109-116).
Stressful situations result in traumatic experiences on the child’s part. These remove the child’s sense of security and open opportunities for ambiguity. Children lose their sense of trust in everybody else around them, especially in adults. Because of this, they need a stable environment where they can be themselves without other people meddling with their desires (Granot, 2005, pp. 113-115).
Reading is a stable experience where the literature offers a new world different from a current demanding situation the child is placed in. Reading literature permits children to lose some of their nuisances and enter a new world that they can explore freely without worrying about what lies ahead in reality.
