Measurement and Data Domain: Converting Measurements
Part 1: Measurement Data Lesson Plan
Select a 1-5 grade level, a corresponding Arizona or other state standard based on the Measurement and Data domain, and a group of 3-4 students from the “Class Profile” who would benefit from the use of augmentative and/or alternative communication devices or other forms of assistive technology.
With your identified learning target and small group in mind, complete a lesson plan, using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” that specifies applicable assistive technology and includes differentiated activities to facilitate students making measurement comparisons, and
Using models of measuring units; or
Using measuring instruments; or
Representing and interpreting the data.
Part 2: Communication Device Rationale
In addition to your completed lesson plan, justify your augmentative and/or alternative communication devices or other forms of assistive technology choices in a 250-500 word rationale.
Make sure to complete lesson plan template attached and write a 250 word rationale as instructed in the directions given.
Thank you!

Converting Measurements
I. Planning
Lesson summary and focus:
The lesson focuses on converting between different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system and applying these conversions to multi-step, real-world problems.
Classroom and student factors:
In the classroom, a student has dyslexia, which affects her ability to read and comprehend written text. There is also a student who has ADHD and struggles with staying focused for long periods. And lastly, there is a student with a physical disability that makes it difficult for her to use a traditional pencil and paper. The teacher needs to be flexible and adaptable in their lesson planning to meet the diverse learning needs of the students. The teacher can create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that enables all students to reach their full potential by considering the unique needs of each student in the classroom,
National / State Learning Standards:
Math.5.MD.1 or 5.MD.A.1: Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real-world problems.
Specific learning target(s) / objectives:
* Students will be able to convert between different units of measurement within the same measurement system, such as converting meters to centimeters or millimeters to meters.
* Students will be able to solve multi-step, real-world problems involving unit conversions, such as converting the length of a marathon from kilometers to miles.
* Students will be able to identify the appropriate tool or unit of measurement to use when measuring objects and convert the resulting measurements to other units as needed.
Teaching notes:
Clarify where this lesson falls within a unit of study.
Agenda:
1 Opening (10 minutes)
* Welcome and introduction
* Review of the previous lesson on measurement and units of measurement
* Pre-assessment to gauge students' understanding of converting between different units of measurement
2 Learning and Teaching Activities (45 minutes)
* Direct instruction on converting between units of measurement, including common conversions (e.g., inches to centimeters, meters to kilometers)
* Guided practice exercises to reinforce new skills and concepts
* Collaborative group activity to solve real-world problems involving unit conversions, using a variety of measurement tools and units
* Independent practice activity to apply new skills and ideas to individual problems and scenarios
3 Closure (5 minutes)
* Summary of key concepts and skills covered in the lesson
* Reflection on student learning and Progress
* Preview of the next lesson on measurement and data
Formative assessment:
During the opening segment of the lesson, a pre-assessment could be administered to gauge students’ prior knowledge and understanding of converting between units of measurement. It can help the teache...
