Functional Behavioral Assessment
The following 5 steps illustrate the process of analyzing student misbehavior in order to make a positive change. Try one!
1. Consider the misbehavior of one of your students. In clearly observable terms, identify the target behavior. (what kind of change do you want to make: increase, decrease, maintain or generalize to a new situation?)
2. How would you take a baseline of the existing behavior. Would you look at frequency, duration or latency? Would you use a checksheet or graph? How long would your baseline last?
3. Carefully describe the student behavior in reference to its antecedents and consequences. (A - B - C)
What is the function of the student's challenging behavior? What purpose does it serve for the student?
4. Come up with a hypothesis and develop an intervention plan. How would you modify the already existing contingencies that set up the challenging behavior?
5. How and when would you evaluate your success?β

Kicking is a crucial manipulative striking technique students must develop in a physical education class. In this case scenario, the student demonstrates excessive kicking during a lesson; thus, the behavior requires modification. The goal is to reduce the excessive kicking in four weeks for a physical education class. I would take the baseline of the kicking behavior by using an observation checklist. Behavior observation checklists would ensure baseline data collection across the five-day timescale to indicate the days recording high and low numbers of the problem behavior. According to Staff et al. (2021), A.B.C. data charts can help the psychiatrist establish what happens right before the kicking behavior (antecedent) and what happens instantly after the behavior (the consequence). This data offers insight into why the child engages in this undesirable behavior.
