Formative and Summative Assessment for Students Taking American Sign Language 1

Coursework Instructions:

You will create assessments for each of the unit plans you created for assignment 3. There are many types of assessments, and for this assignment you will be preparing one formative and one summative assessment for the unit.
In the assignment 3, you complete the formative and summative assessment parts in the Unit Plan and Lesson Plan Templates (red shaded area). Submit them in Canvas.
Formative assessment may be informal or formal and provides the teacher with information that can be used to guide students toward improved learning. It allows for the monitoring of student learning so that teachers can adjust their teaching as needed to increase student learning. It helps students and teachers identify strengths and weaknesses so that areas needing work can be addressed before the end of the unit. Summative assessments may take the form of asking students for feedback, questioning students about a lesson just presented to check their recall, playing a game that requires student recall of information, or having students take a short quiz that does not impact their grade. There are many types of formative assessments, and you should choose the ones most appropriate for the goal of the unit as well as the particular group of students you are working with.
Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning and, in this case, ASL acquisition as well as looking at the success of a defined instructional period. This is typically done at the end of a unit, project or semester. Summative assessments are often used to grade student work and are an excellent tool to measure overall success of the teaching and learning effectiveness. Courses and programs can be assessed through summative assessment processes. Some instructors create pre-tests in order to have a benchmark with which to measure student learning later.
Each assessment plan report should include the following:
One formative assessment
Include the goal of the unit and the assessment – what you hope to find out based on the assessment
Describe the assessment tool or procedure
Include why you chose the specific assessment procedure
Include how the teacher will adjust the following lessons in the unit based on the feedback from this formative assessment
One summative assessment
Include the goal of the unit and this summative assessment: grades, unit effectiveness, future curriculum revision, etc.
Describe the assessment tool or procedure
Include why you chose the specific assessment procedure
Include what you will do with the information you gather
You will do this twice during the semester – once for each unit plan. You are encouraged to create materials that you will actually use during practicum if possible. Each assessment plan report should be between 3 and 5 pages.
Make sure to submit two items in Canvas:
Unit Plan and Lesson Plan Template - Complete the formative and summative assessment parts.

Formative and Summative Assessment: Unit 3 Lessons
Every Tuesday and Thursday at Portland Community College, I teach the class for students taking American Sign Language 1 (ASL 1) remotely online during Zoom, which is the first sign language level. I provide a lecture to the students based on the content included in the TrueWayASL (TWA) program. Based on the book and internet resources, I also built up the TWA PowerPoint lesson we will use during Unit 3.
Although the session ran for four weeks, I was only responsible for submitting the lesson plans every week. Since the student just began studying sign language, the formative Assessment will only cover the most fundamental concepts. The vocabulary for Unit 3 is broken down into four different sections for them to learn. The third unit of instruction teaches students the signs for asking questions respectfully and expressively and the fundamental communication skills necessary to respond to a question by using the signs they have been practicing. The summative Assessment is one quiz each week. When I lecture at the collegiate level, you will receive guidance on the following steps.
Formative Assessment
In the subject of vocabulary, that student is required to conduct weekly vocabulary exercises on their own and frequently use vocabulary words in their online homework. During roll call, I will personally attend to each student to evaluate how well they can fingerspell their first names. When the students answer questions during the lesson lecture, they will study the signs the teachers have shown them and practice signing them in short sentences. Throughout the lesson, I will present one or two questions and allow each student to respond to them using the signs they have learned.
For example, in the discussion group, I ask them, "Do you like getting compliments? Do you give compliments? Should we give more compliments as a society?". The students answered their questions and showed me signs describing what she said about the questions.
As the last formative Assessment, the student is to submit me the GoReact recording of them signing. They are to create their own phrases using the language they have learned throughout the class to answer the questions that are presented to them. The movie should be at most thirty seconds in length and should be uploaded through GoReact TWA.
Summative Assessment
Summative Assessment, The summative exam for Unit 3 consists of a test and a series of quizzes with multiple-choice questions. This is an assignment to test your comprehension and receptive skills bas...
