Analyzing Body Language Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech for the Civil Rights Movement, I Have a Dream, in 1963, and Alice Garza’s speech for the Black Lives Matter movement in 2015 offer excellent depictions of social movement leaders' charismatic and captivating abilities. Martin Luther King Jr. provides a figurative and slow-paced delivery of the historical and the then existing social injustices meted on the African American community on the premise of racism across the United States' social, political, and economic domains (Marshall University, 2022). He expresses his dream, hope, and desire for equality in the United States, where people would be judged based on their character and not by skin color. On the other hand, Alicia Garza echoes both the historical and the current social injustices faced by African Americans across the social, political, and economic domains while also narrating a chronological account of the genesis of the Black Lives Matter movement (Rights, 2015). In essence, both speeches highlight the social injustices meted on the African American community through institutional and national racial discrimination across the social, political, and economic spheres while also calling to action the implementation of effective countermeasures. Martin Luther King Jr. comes across as a passionate, charismatic leader intent on establishing an emotional rapport with his audience through a slow-paced and figurative delivery of his message. He sought to leave a lasting impression on his audience by evoking an emotional connection to the plight of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement’s era by illustrating his knowledge and understanding of the existing inequalities and the existing legal provisions against the same (Marshall University, 2022). He goes beyond the legal provisions and alludes to the God-given capacity for human beings to embrace equality for all races in the United States (Marshall University, 2022).
