Formative and Summative Assessment Plan

Coursework Instructions:

ou will create assessments for each of the unit plans you created for assignment 3. There are many types of assessments, and for this assignment you will be preparing one formative and one summative assessment for the unit.
In the assignment 3, you complete the formative and summative assessment parts in the Unit Plan and Lesson Plan Templates (red shaded area). Submit them in Canvas.
Formative assessment may be informal or formal and provides the teacher with information that can be used to guide students toward improved learning. It allows for the monitoring of student learning so that teachers can adjust their teaching as needed to increase student learning. It helps students and teachers identify strengths and weaknesses so that areas needing work can be addressed before the end of the unit. Summative assessments may take the form of asking students for feedback, questioning students about a lesson just presented to check their recall, playing a game that requires student recall of information, or having students take a short quiz that does not impact their grade. There are many types of formative assessments, and you should choose the ones most appropriate for the goal of the unit as well as the particular group of students you are working with.
Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning and, in this case, ASL acquisition as well as looking at the success of a defined instructional period. This is typically done at the end of a unit, project or semester. Summative assessments are often used to grade student work and are an excellent tool to measure overall success of the teaching and learning effectiveness. Courses and programs can be assessed through summative assessment processes. Some instructors create pre-tests in order to have a benchmark with which to measure student learning later.
Each assessment plan report should include the following:
One formative assessment
Include the goal of the unit and the assessment – what you hope to find out based on the assessment
Describe the assessment tool or procedure
Include why you chose the specific assessment procedure
Include how the teacher will adjust the following lessons in the unit based on the feedback from this formative assessment
One summative assessment
Include the goal of the unit and this summative assessment: grades, unit effectiveness, future curriculum revision, etc.
Describe the assessment tool or procedure
Include why you chose the specific assessment procedure
Include what you will do with the information you gather
You will do this twice during the semester – once for each unit plan. You are encouraged to create materials that you will actually use during practicum if possible. Each assessment plan report should be between 3 and 5 pages.

Every Tuesday and Thursday at Portland Community College, I teach the first level of American Sign Language. I provide the students with lectures utilizing the material from the TrueWayASL program. I made sure that the students had plenty of opportunities to study and test their knowledge by assigning them various worksheets and quizzes. It is essential that students have these opportunities. Worksheets, class discussions, and final examinations are the types of assessments used for formative and summative evaluations. When I teach college, it will instruct you on what steps to take.
I utilize the unit plans and design classes using the materials I offer the students to ensure they have all they need to complete their assignments. The most significant aspect of formative and summative evaluation is that it helps instructors plan ways to get students to do better work on their assignments and quizzes. During the learning process, teachers use several formal and informal evaluations to modify the teaching and learning activities they utilize with their students to help them perform better. It is expected of teachers that they will reflect on their own work and always try to improve it. We are provided with opportunities further to develop our teaching abilities during our student teaching. The opportunity to get feedback on our teaching methods is provided to us by our Portland Community College and to teaching American Sign Language I.
Formative assessment is a broad term for the many ways teachers check on their students' understanding, learning needs, and academic progress throughout a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments help teachers figure out what students do not understand, what skills they have trouble learning, or what learning standards they have not met yet. This way, lessons, teaching methods, and academic support can be changed. Because I knew that the students would benefit from a worksheet, a conversation, and a quiz on this topic, I created all three items just for this location. At Portland Community College, I am now teaching American Sign Language 1 to students who attend online remotely. I assumed that providing the students with the worksheet would help ensure that they understood the weekly American Sign Language video, so I distributed it to them. More sign language practice is required there f...
