1. As a classroom teacher, what steps can you take to become more culturally competent and in tune to the children/families in your class?
The first step of becoming culturally competent is to assess my behavior because attitudes are influenced by culture. It is important to identify differences in culture and become sensitive to those differences because they may arise in class. Secondly, knowing my students will provide valuable information that defines their cultures. This step involves meeting with the children’s parents and discussing their cultural backgrounds.
