Part 1: Fostering Critical Thinking
First Grade: Students will be able to describe characters, settings, and major events in a story using key details.
Learning Activity

A time capsule is a critical thinking activity that allows teachers to use literature to help students recognize and compile ideas (Rozakis, 1998). Using this learning activity, the teacher begins by selecting a short story that all the students have read. The teacher then writes the name of the main character on the board and asks the students to list at least six items that were important to the character.
