Assessments are used for many different purposes in the K-12 educational setting. For example, assessments are used during classroom instruction to measure students’ learning related to the academic content, and different assessments are used to measure students’ overall cognitive, physical, or social-emotional abilities. Regardless of the assessment type, there are specific terms that are often used related to assessments. It is often the responsibility of the special education teacher to explain assessment terminology to families.
Understanding the terminology used in the formal assessment of students who have or may have a disability is a vital first step for collaboration with families. Having such knowledge will assist families in understanding the uses and limitations of specified assessments. Teachers are then able to collaborate and consult with families in a productive manner to inform student-based decision making.
Student assessment results from formal, standardized assessment tools are often statistically based and can be very difficult for families to understand.
Write a 500-750 word article to post on the parent page of the school’s website explaining assessment methods and the basics of statistics used in formal adaptive behavior assessments. The article should be creative and accurately explain how to read and understand assessment results by including the following:
Purpose, definition, and two examples of adaptive behavior assessments
Definition of six specialized assessment terms both of a content and statistical nature including an explanatory example of each used in formal adaptive behavior assessments

The greatest desire of a parent is to see their children win and succeed. However, having a unique child with a learning disability is overwhelming. As special educators, we conduct an adaptive assessment to ensure that every child's need is met. The article aims to educate parents about our routine to review and assure them that we are committed to making special children thrive academically, emotionally, and behaviorally.
Generally, adaptive behavior assessment involves obtaining information from parents, legal primary caregivers, or even teachers about a child with a learning disability to determine their strengths and weaknesses and how well they can perform independently at home, school, and in the community. Notably, adaptive behaviors include grooming, social skills, following school rules, avoiding danger, cleaning, and overall personal responsibility (Logsdon,2020). Thus, to obtain the required information, parents, social workers, guardians, and teachers fill in a questionnaire and norm-referenced instruments such as Vineland adaptive behavior scales and Scale Independent Behavior ( SIB-R). For example, the image below shows a representation of an adaptive scale.
From the image, individuals close to the student filled in the scale, and all had different scores.
However, in every assessment given, limitations are involved. First, the restriction of subjectivity consists of interpreting data or concluding out on personal experiences, feelings, or beliefs (Reschly et al., 2002). For instance, when an educator fills in the questionnaire, an educator might not know the answer about a particular student and instead fill in the assessment based on their opinion or personal experiences.
