Transport and Logistics Policies

Transport and logistic policies are meant to promote the sustainability of the country’s transportation system and increase co-modality. Transport policies aimed at improving the management of freight and cargo for effective and efficient transportation operations. The safety policy is a category that is mostly regulated by the federal government. The policy dictates rules for electronic onboard recorders and hours of service for drivers. The rule states that property carrying drivers are allowed to drive for a maximum of 11 hours after ten consecutive hours off duty (FMCSA, 2017). This means that goods being transported over long distances will have to be assigned more than one driver for the journey. The state and local governments set the highway speed, weight, and size regulations (NCFRP, 2011). Retailers would have to ensure that their trucks do not exceed the limits set by the government.

Regarding environmental policy, all three governments play an active role. The federal government, under Environmental Policy Agency (EPA), sets engine emission standards for trucks as well as fuel consumption standards. Retailers should use trucks that emit fewer amounts of carbon into the environment. The state government is responsible for implementing plans on air quality, while the local government sets regulations on noise or visual impacts of freight facilities (NCFRP, 2011).
