Lecture 9 focuses on Michael Sandel’s book and specifically on the many incentives present in modern society. One of the incentives discussed in the lecture is health bribes. In this case, insurance companies, doctors, and companies are paying people to engage in healthy activities like quitting smoking, taking medications, and even losing weight (Sandel, 2012). These incentives are meant to keep people healthy to prevent extra costs of healthcare. For example, when people do not take their medications, which is the case for one-third to one-half of patients, it results in billions of dollars in additional healthcare costs. In this regard, therefore, insurers and doctors are prompted to offer incentives to patients so that they can take their medications. This, however, raises key ethical concerns. Is it fair?
