From my perspective, Carl Peterson is aware that he is a first shift supervisor and a follower. That is the reason why he is concerned about Sally Onida’s change in behavior and work habits. In particular, Sally seems not to understand that Carl did not promote himself to Mark Rollins’ supervisory position. Despite her working for 15 years at Jamson Manufacturing Company, her experience does not give her a direct ticket to be the next supervisor after Mark’s retirement (Schindler & Rogers, 2016). The decision to select the right supervisor lies with the human resource department. Carl knows he is a follower since he is concerned with the well-being of other employees despite him being their leader. For example, he organized two counseling sessions with Sally so that he can understand her problems and address them before they escalate conflicts in the workplace. Furthermore, Carl is aware that he is the first shift supervisor since he knows that something needs to be done to address issues that have been adversely affecting the production process in the company.
If I were the vice president (VP) of operations at Jamson Manufacturing Company, I would ensure that Carl understands the strategies he should implement to improve the morale of workers on the first shift. First, if Sally does not change and continues to be a problem, Carl should report her to the management. Indeed, it appears that the promotion of Carl was the primary problem that made her change her behavior negatively so that she can hijack excellent performance. In other words, she is inciting her team followers not to handle their responsibilities well since she was not the one chosen to be their supervisor as she anticipated (Schindler & Rogers, 2016). Second, Carl should interact with employees to create a trusting relationship with them. Third, he should allow them to participate in the decision-making process and assure them that their ideas and opinions are highly valued. Consequently, it might take time for workers to collaborate, but eventually, they will understand that Carl is not the source of the performance issues, but instead, their team leader, Sally.
