There are many theories that determine the moral status of the fetus. The moral status of a fetus determines that fetus has the rights of human beings. There is a substance change theory which determines the moral status of human being (Brown, 2018). The second substance change theory dictates that the fetus from implantation to the stage of development of the human body has the moral status of a human being. According to this theory, Marco and Jessica were being hesitant about pursuing the option of abortion and Maria was completely against it. They had their own perspective which cannot be ruled out as wrong because they had their religious obligations which were restraining them from sinning abortion and they consider motherhood as a sacred and natural phenomenon. Dr. Wilson considers the gravity of the situation and suggested abortion keeping in mind the financial state of Jessica and Marco in which they will be unable to facilitate the special needs of the child meanwhile compromising their freedom. The special child will be dependent and burden them with the additional responsibilities. Therefore, the rational course of action should be abortion as many women consider abortion after the diagnosis of fetal anomaly (Hanschmidt et al. 2018). The theory of Dr. Wilson despite being logical is revolting at first. Therefore, Jessica and Marco needed time to process this situation and take a decision as per their choice.
