Social Values
Generally, social values are considered an important part of the beliefs of a society. Specifically, they guide our behavior and provide the general guidelines that determine people’s social conduct. The values help people in arranging their priorities and selecting the best choice of action from a list of various alternatives. Therefore, the work focuses on the evaluation and discussion of data about social values that are given in the reports provided in the assignment.
The first data set is based on the information provided on news and media that claims that young adults living in Western Europe are more politically and socially progressive that the elder members of the society. The report about the fact was placed on an ideological scale that ranges between 0-6 with ‘’zero’’ being the far left while 6 the far right as presented below.
The scale indicates that the young Europeans are more left on the scale than the elderly people in the region. The survey for the eight nations that were included in the research showed that at least a third of people who were younger than 30 years placed themselves on the ideological left. In several nations, this made the youth to be materially more likely to be left-leaning than people who are 50 years and above. An instance is given by considering that data for the UK that indicates that 43% of people who are under 30 years old placed themselves on the furthest left hand side of the scale than the percentage of the old which was 20%. The idea on the ideological scale indicates how Europeans view the primary policy questions that shape the political landscape in the region (Banaji, Shakuntala and Bart 122). Therefore, the results indicate that the European young person’s tend to participate actively in politics than the elderly. Hence, they are socially progressive than the old people in the region.
The second data set is about the East-West divide over gay marriage, religious minorities, and national identity in the European Union. The report is based on the significant variation in public attitudes between the Eastern and Central European nations and the Western European countries. The information that is included in the report is based on a new study by Pew Research Center that conducted a survey on the issue between the years 2015 and 2017.
Apparently as indicated in the graph above, adults in the EU’s Eastern and Central European states are less likely to welcome the Jews and Muslims in their neighborhood than the EU nations of Western Europe. Moreover, they are less likely to promote same-sex marriage. Additionally, the Eastern and Central; European nations are more willing to identify themselves with Christianity than the Western Europeans, and, also express greater levels of religious engagement (Valentine et al. 576). The variation in ideologies are based on the proximity of the nations to the Christian and Muslim communities which make the sections of the European Union to have different views regarding their ideologists and religious beliefs.
The third data set is about the views of various groups in the society regarding the issue of abortion. The issue of whether abortion sho...
