Having a background and understanding how a child develops is crucial to achieving optimal learning. For teachers, it is a key factor to understand child development as to know how children will learn and find strategies in optimizing this learning in the classroom. Domains of development include physical, cognitive, and psychosocial. Approaches to child development are associated with developmental theories to make the understanding of how children grow and learn to be easier. These approaches include the psychodynamic approach, behavioral approach, cognitive approach, and contextual approach. Most of these approaches are similar in ways wherein the sociocultural environment of a child affects his / her learning. In the psychodynamic approach, an activity can be integrated to simulate how the unconscious mind is involved in learning. The behavioral approach is employed by many teachers since it is teacher-centered wherein lessons are given for students to follow, facilitating student learning. using this approach, an activity can be provided to students wherein they will be given instructions to follow, and those who can get the instruction correctly will be given a reward. In contrary to a behavioral approach, the cognitive approach is student-centered. Activities using this approach is centered on developing effective thinking skills for students to be more actively engaged in learning in a self-directed way. In the contextual approach, the teaching style of teachers should incorporate real-life contexts in the learning process of students to enable them to transfer what they have learned in the outside world (Swabey, n.d.).
