Introduction
Transformational leadership is one that is aimed at inspiring positive change. Hooijberg and Lane (2013) note that “transformational leadership is about inspiring employees to perform beyond expectations.” As a leader, one has to find ways to motivate their employees. With productivity decreasing, it is upon the leader to inspire change in attitude and approach. There are different ways through which leaders inspire their employees. A leader can, for example, use the rewards and punishment mechanism to inspire employees. On the other hand, a leader can also use inspirational motivation where they aim to instill confidence in their employees in the hope of enhancing productivity. Regardless of the method used, transformational leaders aim to inspire change.
Describe the major components of transformational leadership
The four components of transformational leadership include:
* Idealized influence – this component describes the leader as a positive role model. One thing that differentiates leaders from other people is how they let their actions do the talking. As a leader, one’s actions should be motivational to the employees. Employees should be inspired to work harder or fight for the company by looking at what the leader does. Additionally, a leader who walks the talk know their limits and will not be seen asking their employees to do things they should not do. This leader’s No is a No, and a Yes is a Yes.
* Inspirational motivation – this component regards a leader’s ability to build confidence, motivate, inspire, and gift their employees a sense of purpose. Employees should not walk around like sheep without a shepherd. As the leader of a group, one has to communicate the vision, communicate individual roles, as well as show a commitment towards the achievement of the goals. As noted above, employees should be siphoning their energy from their leader. So, the belief of the leader in the organization’s direction should be enough to inspire employees to get on board.
* Individualized consideration – even while leading a large group, great leaders distinguish themselves from the rest by getting personal with their employees. Individualized consideration is a component that addresses a leader’s interest in each member’s desires and goals. When a leader becomes invested in the members’ personal life, they make it easier for the members to pursue their dreams and in the end become satisfied and fulfilled while in their current positions.
* Intellectual stimulation – a leader cannot be said to be transformational if they do not make the working environment free of their superiority. What this means is that members or employees need to be free to make decisions or be involved in the decision-making process. Through this, the employees become more confident, innovative, and creative as they work to find ways to solve problems as they arise.
