Organization leadership is key in determining success or failure of any institution. This is true based on the overall impact that organization leaders have on the teams that they manage. In a poor leadership system, employees are likely to be demotivated and lack a sense of unity and direction towards achieving the organizational goals. In a learning environment, good leadership is not a choice but a must have ingredient for harmonious co-existence and overall sustainability of the employees. Such systems are highly characterized by the desire to have an inclusive environment where each individual's views are heard and taken into consideration whenever possible. According to John Dugan; this is particularly important in a higher learning institution where professionals and students interact at different levels. Alumni return to campus to express their frustration with organizational systems that purport the centrality of learning and justice. This makes it necessary to adopt a relevant student affairs practice models that enhance inclusivity of both students and the professionals for a harmonious co-existence.
There are two main types of student affairs practice models; the traditional and innovative models. The traditional one is usually employed in big institutions while the innovative model is applied in small or not to profit institutions (Kuh, Kenzie, Scuh &Whitt 2005). The traditional model is further divided into three sub-sections. The first subsection focuses on when students are not in learning and out of the classroom they engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. Second sub-section is administration centered which focus on functional silos and student services. The third sub-section is learning centered which focuses on competitive and adversarial seamless learning. On the other hand, the innovative model is either student centered or academic centered. The student centered model focuses on the ethic of care, student-driven and student agency. The academic is usually academic driven characterized by collaboration and student affairs.
In the traditional model the out of class centered model plays a vital role in a student. In the extracurricular section the student administrator plays a vital role in aiding the student to get physical and psychological growth. In co-curricular activities; the student’s administrator engages the student in an activity. The administration model focuses on the management in learning. In academic learning model the professionals engage with students in learning. This increases the engagement and performance of the student.
