Academic advising is a session among the academic advisor and the learner. This session orients the student to the institution including what to expect from the school, the quality of education offered in the institution, the rules governing the school, academic and career plans, and guidance into course selection. This academic advising is very important for every student joining a new institution due to the following reasons. To begin with, the student is well informed about the school before applying for a position in the school hence reducing cases of poor choices on the campus one wants to join. However, once one is familiar with the quality of education offered in the campus, he or she is now able to choose the best course they are aspiring to pursue, and this fulfills the objectives and life goals of the student. Academic advising enables students to value their education while in session, thus achieving their dreams. This practice should be encouraged in every institution; therefore, improving universal learning.
Students from different backgrounds experience challenges of accessing and succeeding in higher education due to a lack of academic advising as well as hostility in the university. Due to these hostilities, most of these students might end up dropping out of the campus or experience difficulties while in school. The involvement of academic advising during enrolment into college is therefore recommended since it provides societal support, family care, mentoring, student involvement, and cultural competency as discussed below (Roscoe, 2015). Firstly, academic advisors should support their respective students socially by enlightening them on the current system of the institution, and that it accommodates all students from all backgrounds. This boosts the self-esteem of students, therefore, blending in with other students and return achieving their educational goals and conforming to the policies within the school.
Secondly, such group of students finds it very difficult leaving their families for the campus, and this affects their adjustment into the new environment, therefore, affecting their performance in school. Academic advisors should, therefore, include families of the respective students in every session with them. This will help students comfortably adjust to the new environment, therefore, improving their academic grades. Besides, some students feel inferior to other students in the institution due to different financial classes, and this lowers the self-esteem of such students. Therefore, academic advisors should engage such students in a mentoring program to make them feel connected to the higher education experience, hence raising their self-esteem and incidences of school dropouts reduces as well.
