Gatekeeping, Media Logic, and Media Dependency Theories

Case Study Instructions:

1.What are the key differences between how each of this week’s theories view the relationships between messages, audiences and society?
2. What changes to the gatekeeping process have been brought about by the proliferation of digital and social media? How might future research account for what existing gatekeeping literature fails to consider given these changes?

The three are related because they involve the media sharing information with their audience. However, they have distinct differences based on how they view the relationship between messages, audiences, and society. The gatekeeping theory focuses on deciding the most important message for society (DeIuliis, 2015). For example, with two events running simultaneously, one involving politics and the other education, a media firm must decide which to give live coverage at the expense of the other.

How a news story is packaged, the images and other objects are packaged reinforce the message and determine how people decode it (Burkey, 2019). For example, a news firm can cover a story from a negative point of view, making the audience similarly judge the story. Media logic theory also involves how the audiences become gatekeepers in compiling and sharing events or stories on social media.
The media dependency theory explains how society depends on the media for information about certain events (Ho et al., 2015). For example, peop...
