The [First] Book of Urizen
“The [First] Book of Urizen” by Will Blake was hard to understand at first. However, I realized that the poem is written in chapters and verses, which makes it a parody of the Bible’s Book of Genesis. Blake appears to be possessed by some supernatural powers, which makes him dictate their story. He says, “Eternals I hear your call gladly” (Blake 70). Here, the narrator accepts to be a vessel of the Eternals so that he can pass their message. In particular, Blake uses a character, Urizen, who seems to be the benevolent creator. Blake’s poem reinterpret humans’ spiritual history from when a man was first placed in the Garden of Eden until the commencement of the French Revolution.
