Leaders demonstrate the quality and content of their character through their traits, values, and virtues. Traits are habitual patterns of thought, behavior, and emotions that are considered relatively stable in individuals across situations over time. Leaders display many character traits in different situations (Crossan, 2016). This can be seen by how leaders agree on a matter, how they are open to experience, and the level of privacy they possess, self-confidence, rigidity, or persistence. In terms of values, the character of a leader is displayed in the specific things they assume to be important and worthwhile. The leader's behavior further will show the quality of their character because they will seek more of what they value. In virtues, leaders display the content of their character by consistently having “good” behaviors (Crossan, 2016). This can be "courage, temperance, generosity, magnificence, magnanimity, good temper or truthfulness.” Character is important in leadership because the leader’s character will determine the success or failure of a team or organization.

Business competencies help a leader achieve an organization's financial goals, maximize the resources available, increase production with low costs, and manage the company's expenses. Strategic competencies are important in helping a leader define an organization's direction, the specific tasks to be handled, how things will be done, and the desired outcomes. The four competencies help a student gain the required knowledge, skills, and understanding of the various leadership roles they want to occupy in the future. While still learning classwork, a student can gain information about the market environment, opportunities, and challenges.
