To write a critical appraisal that demonstrates comprehension of the research study conducted, and respond to each of the action items listed under the headings below. Successful completion of this assignment requires that you provide a rationale, include examples, or reference content from the study in your response.
CRITICAL APPRAISAL GUIDELINES: QUANTITATIVE STUDY
Introduction
- Develop a topic sentence in which you will define the purpose of the Research Critique, Part 2
- Formulate a thesis statement which briefly provides a broad indication of your point of view in composing this assignment.
- Include a summary outline to describe the organization and main topics you will include in the body paragraphs of the assignments (see below sections).
Protection of Human Participants
- Identify the benefits and risks of participation addressed by the authors. Were there benefits or risks the authors do not identify?
- Was informed consent obtained from the subjects or participants?
- Did it seem that the subjects participated voluntarily in the study?
- Was institutional review board approval obtained from the agency in which the study was conducted?
Data Collection
- Are the major variables (independent and dependent variables) identified and defined? What were these variables?
- How were data collected in this study?
- What rationale did the author provide for using this data collection method?
- Identify the time period for data collection of the study.
- Describe the sequence of data collection events for a participant.
Data Management and Analysis
- Describe the data management and analysis methods used in the study.
- Did the author discuss how the rigor of the process was assured? For example, does the author describe maintaining a paper trail of critical decisions that were made during the analysis of the data? Was statistical software used to ensure accuracy of the analysis?
- What measures were used to minimize the effects of researcher bias (their experiences and perspectives)? For example, did two researchers independently analyze the data and compare their analyses?
Findings / Interpretation of Findings: Implications for Practice and Future Research
- What is the researcher's interpretation of findings?
- Are the findings valid or an accurate reflection of reality? Do you have confidence in the findings?

- What implications do the findings have for nursing practice? For example, can the study findings be applied to general nursing practice, to a specific population, to a specific area of nursing?

Conclusion
- Emphasize the importance and congruity of the thesis statement
- Provide a logical wrap-up to bring the appraisal to completion and to leave a lasting impression and take-away points useful in nursing practice.
- Incorporate a critical appraisal and a brief analysis of the utility and applicability of the findings to nursing practice.
- Integrate a summary of the knowledge learned.

Introduction
According to Fraser, (2011), most scholars have a false notion that all accepted publications meet the desired standards. Therefore, practitioners must use critical appraisals to determine whether publications could be used for evidenced-based practice. For instance, Heal et al., (2012) made a publication called “Risk factors for surgical site infection after dermatological surgery.” Thus, there is a need to review the journal with a goal of identifying whether it could be used for evidence practice. It is critical that the authors identified the problem statement because surgical site infection from minor surgeries compromises cosmetic outcomes and contributes to patient morbidity (Heal et al., 2012). As a result, the authors conducted a quantitative study that focuses on human participants, data collection, management, and analysis, and interpretation of the study findings. This paper is an objective critique to Heal’s et al., (2012) publication because it argues that the study could be used for evidence-based practice in healthcare.
Protection of Human Participants
It is crucial to note that Heal et al (2012) restrained from mentioning the benefits and risks of participating in the study. Nonetheless, readers can deduce risks such as allergies and patients with sebaceous cyst because participants who exhibited such characteristics were excluded from the study. Additionally, the authors did not mention whether they obtained informed consent from the participants. This is alarming because readers cannot tell if Heal et al., (2012) followed ethical the ethical standards of conducting studies. It is also notable that selection of participants was a responsibility of nurses who helped the researchers to conduct the study i.e. the researchers do not mention whether selection of participants was on a voluntary basis. It is clear that protection of human participants in the study under discussion raises several questions. Nonetheless, the James Cook University Ethics Committee approved the study implying that protection of human participants was guaranteed.
Data Collection
According to Oermann and Hays, (2010), researchers should identify independent and response variables because they enable readers to understand a publication. Nonetheless, Heal et al., (2012) did not identify their variables, but proceeded to discuss their results. Professionals can identify independent variables from the discussion. Hence, the independent variables were re-excision of skin cancer, diabetes, and status of smoking while the overall incidence of infection was the dependent variable. The data collection section also raises questions of the credibility of the study because the authors failed to mention important aspects on data collection.
