Introduction Osteoporosis is a prevalent health issues among adult women, as such, several lifestyle behaviors should be initiated to avert cases of osteoporosis during adolescent. In America, about ten million people suffer from osteoporosis, 80 percent of which are adult post-menopausal women. The attainment of suitable bone mass as well as strength during adolescent provides optimal protection for women from osteoporosis in later stages of life. Nevertheless, WHO alleges that optimal bone mass is attained when women are around 30 years. A good understanding of lifestyle changes that influence the development of bone and strength among young women is significant in averting osteoporosis. One of the key challenges that majority of young adult women do not get enough calcium and vitamin D in their daily intake. Background of study: Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone malady that commonly affects approximately 25-35 million Americans. The malady causes 1.3-1.5 million fractures yearly. Osteoporotic fractures hamper one’s movement especially among affected women. However, prevention costs are far much lesser than treatment of osteoporosis. And yet, if advocacy for prevention is not emphasized, treatment costs would seriously weigh down on those suffering from this condition. Purpose The rationale for this study was to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention to increase amounts of calcium and vitamin D intake in women between 19 to 30 years living in Midwestern states. Research questions What is women’s understanding of calcium, vitamin D and osteoporosis? How to determine the amount of calcium intake for pre and post intervention and adequate daily intake? How to determine the amount of nutritional intake of vitamin D for pre and post intervention, and the adequate daily intake? Research Objectives To assess women understanding of calcium, vitamin D and osteoporosis. To determine amount of calcium intake for pre and post intervention, and the adequate daily intake. To determine the amount of nutritional intake of vitamin D for pre and post intervention, and the adequate daily intake. To determine the intake of diary products for pre and post intervention, and the adequate daily intake. Concepts, phenomena Based on Bandura’s (1997) presumption of individual-efficacy, academic schemes can be efficient when it comes to enhancing a lifestyle change that is somewhat healthy. Bandura asserts that with enhanced information, people will be rather confident that traits will lead to a particular end result and people are likely to alter their behaviors. Nonetheless, in connection to calcium intake, improved information has not always altered behavior. According to Ribeiro and Blakeley (2001) calcium intake among respondents was augmented after executing some form of education awareness on osteoporosis. Nonetheless, Sedlak, Doheny, and Jones (1998) established that enhanced information know how did not particularly assure the ...
