Orr's "Twice as Less" and Delpit's "What Should Teachers Do?"

Article Critique Instructions:

Papers should be 2-3 double spaced pages and should analyze critically one major issue in a reading assignment, one you find thought-provoking or problematical. Possible approaches:
1) Develop a logical and/or empirical critique of the arguments you analyze (e.g., Does the evidence support the arguments?)
2) Compare material in readings with other theory/research material presented in seminar sessions;
3) Compare and contrast material in one reading assignment with that in another; or
4) Use material in the reading assignment to assess other research or data you know well (including your own). The point of the papers is for you to demonstrate that you've thought through and creatively analyzed one major issue in the reading assignment. (Avoid just summarizing and develop your insights).
This week's readings: THESE ARE THE MAIN READINGS THAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE CRITIQUE
- Orr, E. W. (1997). Twice as less: Black English and the performance of Black students in mathematics and science. WW Norton & Company. (Chapter 5 & 6)
- Delpit, L. (1998). What should teachers do? Ebonics and culturally responsive instruction. In T. Perry & L. Delpit (Eds.), The real Ebonics debate: Power, language, and the education of African-American children (pp. 17-28). Boston: Beacon Press.
Organizing thoughts:
- Are there similarities between what Orr is attempting to do with her students and what Lisa Delpit offers?
- In other words, is Orr's approach a culturally responsive one?
- Is it possible to have an accurate understanding of a mathematics concept, but convey it inaccurately through one's language?

Critique Analysis
Language and cultural diversity provoke learning in various institutions. Delpit (1998) assesses how the language process perspective relates to literacy and holistic approaches to reading and writing. Delpit argues that language processing may not have an impact; however, performance depends on the explicit teaching of skills. Both papers aver that when it comes to skill-oriented training for black pupils, progressive activists should pay attention to concepts and analytical perspectives. Many of the problems with Orr’s pupils were linguistic (Orr, 1997). In that light, she judged that it is a profound examination of the notion that basic principles in mathematics and science may be difficult to comprehend due to minor nonstandard interpretations of sentence structure, connectives, and relative pronouns or a lack of familiarity with standard interpretations. Nevertheless, Orr provides enough evidence explaining how cultural diversity and language help in learning, putting the audience a chance to choose whether conclusions are reasonable.
In addition, Delpit asserts that teachers must educate black students about the laws of power while accepting individual differences, which is similar to Orr's view. This relates to a collaboration between students of color and adults who reflect their culture within the context of significant communication undertakings. According to Perry (1998), language heterogeneity or Ebonics resolution impacts linguistically varied students' educational environments; also, it presents options for substitutes that individuals may employ in different contexts and further limit negative attitude to achieve systematic language and the standard code (Perry, 1998). The research reveals that children of colour appreciate the social components of an environment more than conventional kids do, and they often prioritize sentiments, acceptance, and emotional intimacy above academic success.
Orr's method is responsive to cultural differences. Verbal conflation is significant, as is shown in one of her instances while determining the distance between Cleveland and Washington. She assesses a few collaborative programs designed to he...
