1 A Retrieved Reformation by O. Henry
Jimmy Valentine is a notorious criminal in the story. He is set free, but he continues to live a criminal life. Jimmy meets a woman who inspires him to leave his old life. He intends to marry her, but when a cop learns of his whereabouts, the cop wants to apprehend him. However, when he realized Jimmy had changed, he stopped chasing (Updike 1). Thus, a man can change.
2 A Jury of Her Peers by Susan Glaspell
Minnie Wright is accused of murdering her husband. The village men intruded on her home to look for evidence and believe she was insane. Additionally, the men did not allow women to intervene. So, the women conduct their investigation and conclude that Minnie did it in self-defense (Updike 85), revealing gender inequality in this story.
3 The Gutting of Couffignal by Dashiell Hammett
The plot revolves around the thievery and robbery of Couffignal. Several successful robberies have failed, but the last one failed (Updike 105). The story implies that when faced with adversity, one may choose to do the wrong deeds to overcome it.
4 The Murder by John SteinbeckThe plot revolves around a man and a woman who marry but do not truly love each other. They are both unfaithful (Updike 193). The story depicts how infidelity can devastate a marriage.
5 Sense of Humor by Damon Runyon
The plot revolves around Joe the Joker, the man with the best sense of humor that can make everyone laugh except for Frankie. Frankie and Joe’s wife have an affair. Frankie attempts to kill Joe but kills Rosa because of Joe’s humor (Updike 204)
6 Red Wind by Raymond Chandler
The plot revolves around a detective who witnesses a murder in a bar and encounters a corrupt politician, stolen jewels, and a murdered victim (Updike 235).
7 The Catbird Seat by James Thurber (Updike 279)
It is the story of an ordinary man who gets rid of a superior woman in his workplace. The story teaches us that people will do anything to get to the top (Updike 279).
8 An Error in Chemistry by William Faulkner
This story is about a man who murdered his wife and vanished after confessing the crime. He poses as someone else, but his lack of knowledge of traditions reveals that he is a criminal (Updike 318). This story demonstrates that a criminal will always find a way to avoid punishment.
9 The Adventure of the President’s Half Disme by Ellery Queen
The plot revolves around solving a George Washington case. The story depicts the narrator’s struggle to find solutions to problems. However, there are no actual criminals; instead, there is a puzzle to be solved, which involves mathematics (Updike 344).
