Program Note for The Fate of Fifth Symphony by Beethoven
For this assignment you will create 3-4 pages of program notes for a musical work of your choosing.
Your program notes must not only support musicological/historical implications and background surrounding the piece of music you chose, but also should include societal/cultural context as well that are relevant to the music.
Your program note must include various writing styles including, narrative, persuasive, and descriptive forms of writing at appropriate points along the way.
Please submit your program notes accompanied by a bibliography in standard MLA format that uses at least 10 scholarly sources of your choosing. Five of the 10 sources must be books.

The Fate of Fifth Symphony
Listening to music is perceived as a source of relaxation or expression. In times of difficulty, art is critical in promoting courage and rejuvenating one's strength (Hart, 2005). Moreover, it is healthy to listen to music that can boost one's confidence. This source of entertainment mostly serves to free one from their struggles to realize victory movements, which are possible through listening to symphonies (Zeig et al., 2019). This work will look at the Fate of the Symphony as a source of entertainment and its cultural influence in society.
Between 1804 and 1808, Ludwig Van Beethoven composed Fate Symphony, also referred to as N0.5 in C minor, Op 67. The music was created in the early 19th century, a time of extreme change and upheavals. In other words, Beethoven's work came about as a result of events of the time, such as the Napoleonic Wars and the French Revolution. Listening to four movements' notes influences one to confront a scene in their mind where a soldier is in battle and facing different situations (Will, 2002). At times, the warrior is hopeful of winning the war.
However, things end tragically when the individual is overwhelmed by the enemy, as signified by the rising sound of horns and trumpets, marking the significance of motif rhythm. The Fifth Symphony illustrates the composer's struggle with fate and destiny. Its celebrated opening motif is well-known worldwide (Burnham, 2000). One is taken through different moods by varying sounds of instruments, signifying the source behind its inspiration, which is war. The music has attracted interest among many audiences since its invention. It remains one of the top-most known classical music compositions and the most listened to symphonies. Its prominence is attributed to its famously known opening motif that is easy to recognize.
The Symphony has four short notes followed by a long note. Some of the instruments associated with its production include two trumpets, a contrabassoon, two clarinets, a flute, two bassoons, two oboes, a piccolo, strings, and four horns. The song's output involves four movements to give it a lively feel. The first motif, Allegro Con Brio, appears in Sonata form. This opening motif is repeated in different formats and contexts throughout the movement. The second execution, marked by Adante con moto, is somehow lyrical and a graceful exercise in ternary form.
