In effect, stakeholders in the education sector have chosen to take matters seriously by preparing and training teachers on the best way to utilize weapons. This is a precautionary move to see teachers act proficiently during assaults whenever an emergency necessitates self-defense and securing learners. This paper explores various reasons why teachers should not be armed.
Video Summary
The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which led to the killing of twenty children and six staff members, served as an ill-fated eye-opener to many schools to rethink the decision to arm teachers (Education Week). Since the unfolding of this unfortunate instance, many school districts have been contemplating equipping educators with concealed weapons to help counter unforeseen eventualities (Facione et al., 2016). Lori Snyder-Lower, the superintendent of Morgan Local School District, argues that the response time for emergency services may not always be prompt. She notes that the response team may take hours to get to the school and the scene depending on different circumstances, which unfairly predisposes the students and teachers to more risk and makes learning institutions' soft targets.' However, the move to equip teachers with weapons faces hurdles from the federal and some state laws, which designate schools as gun-free zones. Jennifer Harper, the deputy director of Moms Demand Action, shares similar sentiments arguing that equipping teachers does not necessarily save the situation because this will detract the schools' focus on preventing such eventualities (Facione et al., 2016).
Reasons Why Teachers Should Not Be Armed
