Accordingly, this paper will focus on Books 9 and 10 of The Odyssey to demonstrate how the book's author showcased these virtues.
Chapters 9 and 10
In Books 9 and 10 of The Odyssey, Odysseus displays two performances of masculine virtue through his devotion to duty. In Book 9, his masculine virtues are demonstrated through his leadership and strategic thinking in the face of danger. In contrast, in Book 10, his performance of masculine virtue is seen through his ability to control his emotions and resist temptation.
In Book 9 of The Odyssey, Odysseus's masculine virtues are highlighted as he demonstrates his leadership and strategic thinking. Specifically, Book 9 showcases Odysseus's leadership and strategic thinking. Despite being in a dire situation with his men trapped in the Cyclops' cave, Odysseus is able to devise a plan to blind the giant and escape. This episode highlights Odysseus's ability to think on his feet and create effective plans, which are essential traits for a leader to possess.
Going deeper into the story, it could be seen that when Odysseus and his men arrive on the island of the Cyclops, they face imminent danger as they are trapped in a cave with the giant Polyphemus. Odysseus's performance of masculine virtue is evident in his decisive leadership as he devises a plan to blind Polyphemus and escape from the cave. He shows his strategic thinking when he tells Polyphemus that his name is "Nobody" and then blinds him with a sharpened stake, as he states, “then I gave orders that the men cast lots for who would lift the stake with me and press it into his eye when sweet sleep overtook him”(Odyssey 9.331-333). This scene portrays Odysseus's strength, bravery, and cunning, which are all traditionally considered masculine virtues.
