Before joining this course, I had a vague idea of what the term professional communication meant. By then, my understanding of professional communication was based on experiences I had borrowed from working in casual employment positions with different companies as a casual laborer. All this time, I had conceptualized professional communication based on my observations and listening to how my colleagues communicated with our supervisors to get tasks completed. Therefore, professional communication was getting the message across as politely as possible and implementing what was required.
At midterm, and as we proceeded through the various sessions, my understanding of the term professional communication evolved greatly. I learned that professional communication encompassed not only listening and speaking but also writing. Over the course, the importance of using a formal, professional, and civil tone when communicating with work colleagues has been emphasized. It is important if one is looking to make a good impression on the intended audience (Meloncon & St. Amant, 2019). This is of particular importance in an age where traditional forms of communication have been replaced with technologically based modes of communication, including but not limited to emails and electronically based visual communication.
