Guideline for writing assignments:
Both of the mid-term and final papers should be devoted to analyzing one or more literary texts we read this semester. You can refer to the presentation guideline to find an appropriate topic for your paper. Extra research is not required, since the main point of your paper is to present a clear, compelling argument about literature. I want you to develop a claim or argument about something you think is important. You will be expected to find evidence from the readings or outside sources to support your contentions.
ARGUMENTATION
Your paper should:
• contain a clearly formulated thesis statement in the first paragraph. The thesis statement should lay out what you are arguing in the paper and how you plan to make your case. Like a road map, I/the reader should have a general idea from only one paragraph about what you are writing about and how you plan to develop your ideas.
• move in a logical progression from paragraph to paragraph. Each part should contribute a little more to your overall point.
pay special attention to details of the fictional work, including narrative structure, character development, use of other literary devices, etc., to demonstrate your ability to read literature.
• have an interesting conclusion, in which you consider what the ultimate significance of your topic might be. Don’t just summarize your argument so far, but rather think about how your topic is interesting or relevant for the study of Chinese literature and culture. Feel free to speculate a little if you don’t have a lot of familiarity with Chinese history.
You do not have to summarize the plot of the novel (short story, novella) unless it is important to your argument. We have both read the works, so feel free to move straight into your analysis/argument.

• use standard 1 inch margins
• be numbered (except for the first page)
• cite all sources used
Quotations over 5 lines should be single spaced and indented (block quotes).
GRADING
I look at several aspects of your paper when grading. Here are some general guidelines to consider:

Grading rubric for the presentation:

(1) Content: whether you have interesting ideas and arguments.
(2) Preparation: your attitude and seriousness for your work .
(3) Proficiency of delivery: whether you have made yourself clear and informative.
(4) Effect: whether you have gasped people’s attention and interest.

The “Chronicle of a Blood Merchant” is an emotionally intense novel that gives the reality of the Chinese in their struggle to survive in the country's season of critical changes and upheaval. The Chinese society characterized by hostility, impoverishment and the author gives the story through the eyeglasses of a Chinese family's survival and growth. There is the provision of an emotional story concerning the survival mechanisms and the processes of growth that occurred amidst struggles. The main character in the novel Xu Sanguan presents a typical Chinese protagonist surviving through tough times amidst changing family dynamics. Xu Sanguan is forced to sell his blood for the reasons of meeting the high demands for basic needs from his family (Anagnost, 2006). Thesis statement: “Realism is an important concept that is key in the description of the confusion that mares a soul of a generation amidst brutal experiences.”
The theme of realism and Resilience of the Soul
This paper discusses the theory of realism and the existing comparison between the Western historical revolution and the Chinese revolution. The term “Resilience of the Soul” is applicable in this case for the sole reasons of developing the conceptual literary analysis. The author stages reality to disclose the various portions of the novel. Importantly, the realists always seek to hide the various processes involved in the creation of the work of art. The construction of the novel imitates the audience's perception of reality. For instance, in the Western culture, blood is donated, but in China especially in the 1950s, the blood was specifically sold in public hospitals. This led to blood contamination and the spread of diseases which is not represented in the book “Chronicles of a Blood Merchant.” However, the book tries to explain the horrors that were associated with this scheme and the determination and resilient approach from the people (Anagnost, 2006).
The scenes of the confessions as made by the family and the various scenes challenges the theoretic concept of a superiority complex as staged by some theorists. There are imminent patterns in the novel supposedly used for the reasons of overshadowing actual subversive comments. In this case, the theme of superiority uncovers the existing subversive elements that actualize specific contexts of production as well as positive responses to works of art. In the “Chronicles of a Blood Merchant,” the author uses humble characters that easily identifies with the Chinese culture (King, 2013). The theory of superiority remains an important term used to represent the various social functions of art in this novel that depicts the resiliency of a soul. However, most of the theories on realism and superiority draw their examples from the western culture/perspective. In this case, the general conceptualization of superiority of culture is defined through aesthetics, cultural and political boundaries as presented across artistic media.
