Provision of comfort is an important aspect of care for all health institutions. Dr. Katherine Kolcaba developed the Theory of Comfort that concentrates on improving the satisfaction and outcomes of the patients and also enhances the integrity of the healthcare institution (Kolcaba, Tilton & Drouin, 2006). The paper will briefly describe the comfort theory. It will also provide the rationale behind the selection of the theory and the plan involved in the implementation of the theory in a nursing practice. The challenges and solutions involved in using this theory will also be highlighted.
A brief description of the theory
In the nursing profession, comfort has always been a valued concept which was never made into a nursing theory. Katherine Kolcaba developed this simple concept into a theory which has become beneficial and applicable to patients. Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort highlights that when comfort interventions produce the necessary outcomes, the recipients who are the patients or their families, are highly likely to participate in other health-seeking behaviors. Health-seeking behaviors can be external, internal or even a peaceful death (Tiase, 2003).
The increase in participation of health-seeking behaviors eventually assists the health institution in providing such interventions that will achieve better standards of care for its patients (Kolcaba & DiMarco, 2005). This is vital since the whole theory is based on a different perspective as it focuses on the ability to benefit not only the patient but also the facility providing the care.
Rationale for Selecting
Since I work with skilled post-operative patients, this theory enables me to include the intentional evaluation of comfort needs and also the design of comfort measures to address those patient needs. The theory is essential since it will also include the reassessment of the levels of comfort of the patient after implementation. This theory is critical since it acknowledges the importance of the comfort of the patient and allows all medical professionals to collaborate in the standard of care delivered to the patient (Krinsky, Murillo & Johnson, 2014). Additionally, it is through such a theory; the medical practitioners can cover all the fulfilling needs of patients holistically.
Implementation Plan
