The event that Stands Out
One event that stands out from my nursing school clinical practice occurred while working in the telemetry unit when a patient experiencing chest pains was brought to the emergency department (ED). This event was meaningful since it provided me with an opportunity of having a practical experience with a patient who had cardiac complications. My first step was to inquire about the clinical history of the patient. After discovering that the patient had suffered from cardiac complications a couple of times in the past, I took him to the telemetry unity for a continuous cardiac monitoring.
Factors Guiding My Actions
The main factors that guided my actions are the clinical history of the patient, his current symptoms, which included chronic chest pains, and the guidelines that involve admitting patients to the resource-intensive telemetry unit. Furthermore, I have learned that certain criteria are used to guide healthcare professionals before telemetry admission. Evidence indicates that cardiac monitoring requires extensive examination and can, therefore, lead to an increased backlog in the ED. Therefore, only patients whose cardiac complications can worsen rapidly should be admitted to the telemetry unit.
Appropriateness of My Actions
I performed the most appropriate actions by first examining the clinical history of the patient and assessing his current symptoms before admitting him in the telemetry unit.
