Conflict Resolution at the St. Clare Hospital
The St. Clare Hospital was founded in 1988. In the past few years, the revenues have dropped steadily to a point where CEO James Edwards is considering cost control to improve the organization’s bottom line. Mr. Edwards understands physicians play a critical role in controlling cost, but they do not have a great interest in cooperating with him to sustain the viability of the hospital. Mr. Edwards decides to hire Wendy Jones as the chief operating officer and empower her to cut costs for the hospital. The first measure taken by Ms. Jones is to outsource the interpretation of imaging readings and fire the radiologist Dr. Harris. By doing so, the hospital would save $160,000 per year. However, after two weeks, the hospital sees 18% inaccuracy rates in outsourced reading reports. The hospital might face legal liabilities from inaccurate readings. Mr. Edwards and Ms. Jones want to stay with the plan to control costs, but the physicians are furious. The medical director, Dr. Wiseman, gathers all staff physicians to a call for action.

Conflicts are commonplace in every organization. A quick survey in an organization will reveal almost all types of conflict. There are four different types of conflicts. These include interpersonal conflict, intrapersonal conflict, intragroup conflict, and intergroup conflict. If allowed to thrive and divide the employees, conflict can financially hurt and cripple an organization. So, the management of an organization has to stay vigilant and act swiftly to avert these dangers. Below is an elucidation of the types of conflicts, the management styles, proposed resolution strategies, and recommendations for the scenario under review.
Types of Conflict
There are two types of conflict in the case under review. The first one is intrapersonal conflict. Intrapersonal conflict as Butler (2019) notes “occurs within you.” She continues to say that this type of conflict “can develop out of your thoughts, ideas, emotions, values, and predispositions.” The person who appears to be conflicted in the case under review is the CEO James Edwards. As indicated, Mr. Edwards sought to reduce the company’s cost of operation. His objective is coming from a place of concern, but he is conflicted on whether he should talk or involve physicians in controlling cost. However, he knows that “they do not have a great interest in cooperating with him to sustain the viability of the hospital.” This leaves him with only one option: to hire an outsider.
Mr. Edward’s move to hire from outside, however, leads to another type of conflict which is known as intergroup conflict. Intergroup conflict arises when misunderstandings happen between different groups or teams working in the same organization. In the case at hand, the management of the organization appears to conflict with the physicians. The management is executing its objectives with particular goals in mind. However, the management’s plan appears to be interfering with the physicians and their capacity to deliver. An intergroup conflict has thus ensued, and the physicians are up in arms to protest the management’s decisions.
Conflict Management Styles
There are five conflict management styles. These include compromising, collaborating, avoiding the conflict, standing your ground or competing, and finally, accommodating.
