The chapter of conflict and development outlines the development as a conflictual process and intervention and peacemaking as a way of intervening between the conflict created by development (Haslam, Schafer & Beaudet, 2017). Development is the way through which different cultures across the world can earn the ways of living off one another in order for them to associate effectively regarding business and political relationships. Examining the discourses of development helps individuals to understand the deeper ideas of the development policies and practices. Cultural beliefs play a substantial role in shaping development due to the various historical positions and assumptions that we make. The process of development faces many challenges because not all cultures can appreciate the ways of living of other people. As a result, this brings about conflict among the involved parties. According to the authors, such conflicts can be solved through peacemaking and intervention.
Peacemaking is a broad topic because there are various ways through which parties can make peace with one another. The initial step to peacemaking is the identification of the cause of the conflict. The peacemaking process creates a strong base for the process of mediation, reconciliation, and arbitration (Wallensteen, 2018). Countries from different parts of the world find themselves in political conflicts and, this makes it difficult for citizens to engage in trade activities. Therefore, to make peace, the involved parties have the obligation of looking for a mediator who can facilitate the negotiation process. As a result, the parties can carry out trade activities between each other hence enabling them to fulfill the concept of development. The interaction between people of different cultures plays a substantial role in bringing in new ways of doing business and hence a corresponding economic growth. The economic trend of any given country has many contributions to other factors such as peace. Economic growth helps in the reduction of unemployment rates within the country and turn, a reduction in criminal activities. As well, there will be minimal political disagreements because the citizens believe that the government is equally allocating resources.
