Ladies and gentlemen, and everyone present. I am here today to discuss a subject that is very close to my heart: body shaming. I understand what you are thinking. "Not another boring speech on body positivity, please." But let me assure you that this will not be a dull speech. It will be entertaining, interesting, and, most importantly, compelling.
Body shaming is a critical topic that is sometimes disregarded, yet it is a huge issue in our culture. So, what exactly is body shaming? Body shaming is when someone is mocked, criticized, or made fun of because of their physical appearance. This could be a person's weight, height, skin color, facial features, or any other physical attribute. According to Lamont (2021), Body shaming is a significant concern that can harm an individual's mental well-being and pose serious health hazards. As a result, I encourage everyone to stop body shaming and embrace body positivity.
First and foremost, as said above, body shaming can harm a person's mental health. It can result in anxiety, despair, low self-esteem, and body dysmorphia. Kurk et al. (2021) note that body dysmorphia is a psychiatric condition in which a person becomes obsessed with inadequacies about their image. This can cause an individual to become excessively self-conscious, avoid social interaction, or even become suicidal. Nobody deserves to feel this way, and we must stop body shaming to avoid such mental health difficulties.
According to Warnik et al. (2022), body shaming can contribute to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. These are serious, life-threatening conditions with long-term consequences for a person's health.
