You have been asked to create a video presentation for the administrative team of your school about leveraging home and school connections in English language instruction. Record a 3-5-minute video that discusses the following:
-Cultural influences, cultural competence, and social-emotional needs of ELLs in teaching and learning.
-Intentional strategies for family and community engagement that support and highlight the assets of home language, communication, family involvement, and culture to build family, community, and school partnerships.

Cultural influences are an essential consideration in ELL learning and teaching. A student brings to the classroom specific syntax and language rules and grammar from their native language. Educators must consider how cultural influence and expectations affect instruction and learning, from mastering word order and gendered language to navigating appropriate classroom behavior and student-teacher relationships. Therefore, educators must learn and develop ELL students’ cultural norms and characteristics. Teachers demonstrate cultural competency by connecting lesson material to students’ particular cultural experiences and correctly interpreting student behaviors in their proper cultural context. A culturally competent learning environment acknowledges and celebrates diversity and includes multiple modalities that speak to the diverse learning styles of ELL students (Nieto & Zoller Booth, 2009). Another essential consideration in ELL learning and teaching relates to the socioemotional needs of ELL students. ELL learners face unique challenges, and acclimatizing to their school’s culture can be challenging.
Therefore, educators need to account for how socioeconomic and historical inequity affects students’ social and emotional growth. Therefore, teachers must incorporate self-management, relationship skills, self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making to develop social-emotional competencies among ELL learners.
One intentional strategy for family and community engagement that considers and develops home language, communication, family involvement, and culture in developing community partnerships is incorporating cultural traditions of ELL families all over the school. Teachers can schedule class activities around significant cultural events or holidays while aiming for authenticity.
