Its interpretations can be purposely modified to mean different things. The second amendment gives individuals the right to bear and keep firearms for self protection. This has not been the case all along, the second amendment was initially interpreted as the rights of a state and not an individual to bear and keep arms (Bogus 1998). This includes militia units that used to form the state. This hassle between the right of the militia and individuals on gun ownership began back in 1939 in a court case of the U.S vs. Miller. This was swept under the carpet but finally cleared in 2008 in another court case involving District of Columbia vs. Heller (Finkelman 2008). Is it justified to own a gun as citizens of America? Picture yourself walking home from school one evening. Looking behind you there is a masked man brandishing a knife. The first though will be to run, but, how first are? What if you cannot outrun him? This is a life or death situation. However if you had a gun all you had to do is wield it and you might scare him off. Your life depends on it. The 2nd amendment comes with hope to security in a country where it has been missing. The government is trying to blindfold the citizens under the false pretense of protections from fanatics and crime. The sad truth is that it is the corrupt bureaucrats trying to safeguard their power and position. It is evidenced that in regions that has seen banning of the right to gun ownership, crime rate increase rampantly. 25 years after the DC gun ban and gun related murder increased by 51%.
