Assignment
This is your biggest speech of the semester that demonstrates your knowledge learned in the course of proper speech content, organization and delivery.
You are to deliver, record, and publish to YouTube and submit via Canvas a 2-3 minute speech based on the appropriate scenario below. A rubric is provided to explain the grading process. To help you prepare your speech, you should use the Content Template and ALL THREE of the module lectures, as well as feedback from your previous speeches. This presentation will test your knowledge of, and use of the key content elements and your ability to use supporting material (such as facts, statistics, personal experience) effectively.
This speech must represent your own, original work. Be creative!
Identify your speaker credibility as well as your specific audience during your introduction.
You may gain 2 points extra for wearing professional dress for this presentation!!
Speech & Recording Specifications
One 3x5 or 4x6 notecard is REQUIRED with your full speaking points outlined and to reference while you speak as needed. SHOW THE FRONT AND BACK OF YOUR NOTECARD (2 SECONDS PER SIDE) CLOSEUP TO THE CAMERA BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR SPEECH. -3 points deducted if notecard (with speaking notes) not shown.
Do not use: more than 1 notecard, sheets of paper or read something off screen or risk failing the speech assignment. This is a practice in being extemporaneous, which is what you will do in your professional life...not reading a screen or poster.
STUDENTS RISK A FAILING GRADE IF THEY READ A SCRIPT OFF SCREEN. Just talk to your audience in a conversational manner about your topic in an organized way that you rehearsed ahead of time.
Use your notecard to read and reference as needed, but no more than 25% reading of your speech. Deductions may be assessed at the instructor's discretion.
Rehearse a few times before gathering and recording in front of your audience.
Be extemporaneous, not scripted. And if you misspeak, correct yourself and continue. No need to keep redoing your recording if you have rehearsed ahead.
An audience of at least three college-aged (or older) individuals (not animals) is required.
To prove an audience is present, scan the audience with your recording device immediately prior to and after the speech in one recording. REMIND YOUR AUDIENCE NOT TO STOP RECORDING.
The full recording (including your speech) should be one continuous shot with your audience shown before and after your speech. A speech that fails to scan the audience before and after will lose 5 points.
Your speech must be exactly between 2 and 3 minutes. A speech shorter than 2 minutes or longer than 3 minutes will lose 5 points. The recording of the audience is not included in your speech time.
Record yourself speaking from head to knee height and make sure that your face and physical delivery are viewable throughout the video.
After recording, go back and check the audio and video to ensure you can be seen and heard throughout the speech. If we cannot see and hear your speech, you will receive a zero for the assignment.
You should record your speech at a resolution of 640 x 480 or higher. Note that some camera phones cannot record at this resolution. Resolution settings on your phone are typically found under “Options.”
Check your privacy settings in YouTube! You must mark your video as UNLISTED or PUBLIC in order for me to view it. If your video is marked PRIVATE, I won't be able to grade it!
You are giving a presentation and NOT performing for the camera alone. The camera is like a 4th audience member, so you do not need to look at it throughout the presentation. You should be focusing on your audience.
This presentation will test your knowledge of, and use of the key content elements and your ability to use supporting material effectively.
State your central idea, briefly and clearly.
Establish your credibility with your audience. NOTE: your position (i.e., director of marketing, etc) does not grant you any more credibility than, for example, a car salesman has with a car buyer.
Establish the relevance of your presentation to your audience. You may need some research here as there may be several different approaches.
Support your central idea with at least 3 points. Again, you may need some research.
Conclude your presentation with a clear statement of purpose or call to action.
Display sincerity, enthusiasm, confidence and professionalism during your speech
Speech Scenarios
You may pick one of the following topics to help develop your speech. Feel free to add a visual aid during your speech as supporting evidence to highlight the main idea of your speech.

For these assignment scenarios, remember to consider and research your audience as you did in the first scenario.
SCENARIO #1- CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESENTER – You are the president of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, and you are giving a workshop to 100 Auburn student organizations members and faculty advisors. The theme of the workshop regards how to successfully find a job in the industry of [your choice], and your 2-3 minute presentation topic is “What Employers are Looking for in a College Graduate.” Your industry choice should be clear from the speech content.
SCENARIO #2- ELECTORAL COLLEGE – As a business student who keeps up with current national trends, you can see that the presidential election has had a great effect on stocks, national business, and international business. You may explore the pros and cons of the electoral college system which ultimately elects the president, and advocate for or against the electoral college system. Choose a particular business audience to whom you are speaking.
SCENARIO #3- SHOPPING & ENTERTAINMENT IN THE CITY - Which shopping or entertainment option do we need in this town that we do not have? You work for the Convention and Visitors Bureau and are speaking to a gathering of INVESTORS. There are 63 people in the audience from the leading agencies in the city. Tourism in our town is down, and you must look at why...and what can fix it.
SCENARIO #4- YOUR CAREER ASPIRATIONS – What is your dream job? Do you want to be the editor of Vogue Magazine, or an astronaut, or an FBI agent, an Auburn parking enforcer? We want to learn reasons that support why you think your “dream job” would be the best job. You will need to support your points with evidence and facts, but we want to get to know what you really want in a career.
SCENARIO #5- Suggest your Own topic and scenario– You may do research to develop your own topic and have it approved at least two weeks before the speech is due. Email or Canvas message Mrs. Irwin with your suggested topic, the audience you will be speaking to in your speaking situation, and a scholarly publication link showcasing the topic in some way so that we understand your concept. If you fail to submit a topic at least two weeks before the speech is due, we will not consider it. This is a good opportunity to develop a pitch for a product or service that you have in mind.
